Neddy Smith

An inquest into Sallie Anne Huckstepp’s death began in 1987, and the exhaustive process lasted four years. Many false claims were made by various heroin addicts and criminals in taped conversations during the hearing, but at the end of this long process Coroner Glass delivered his conclusions in February 1991.

Glass found that Huckstepp had been murdered by a person or persons unknown. The NSW government offered a $50,000 reward for any information that resulted in an arrest, and Huckstepp’s sibling Debra claimed that her sister died because she ‘knew too much’.

By September 1996, magistrate Pat O’Shane found that sufficient evidence existed to charge standover merchant, armed robber and drug trafficker Neddy Smith for the murder of Sallie Anne Huckstepp. By then the hardened criminal had contracted Parkinson’s disease while serving a jail term for a road rage murder. Before he stabbed the allegedly errant truck driver to death, Smith had indulged in a long drinking session with Rogerson.

...Huckstepp’s sibling Debra claimed that her sister died because she ‘knew too much’.

It is anticipated that Smith, despite his poor health, will still answer charges over the Huckstepp homicide at a future trial.
